In response to an earlier post about books by church leaders having disclaimers that the views expressed in a book are not official church doctrine, I have a request for members of this FB group. This same kind of disclaimer is at the front of Elder Spencer W. Kimball’s The Miracle of Forgiveness, a book published in 1969 that countless Mormons from a couple generations have read, since it was approved reading for missionaries, and is still in circulation. I am working with the family to see if the book can be revised or taken out of print, since many parts are so harsh and dated and unscientific and out of harmony with current church positions, especially on homosexuality. I worry about the harm the book has done, especially in the hands of those questioning whether they could ever be seen as worthy in the sight of god or the church. I object the most to sections on homosexuality, especially the view expressed repeatedly that homosexuality can be cured and that it doesn’t exist because god is not a pervert. I also object to suggestions that losing one’s virtue is worse than death. I’m quite aware that President Kimball during his lifetime regretted some of his harsh tone and positions in the book, and would have revised it himself if he had lived longer and had the energy. So, I welcome anyone who wishes to comment below and to PM me (and then I will give you my e-mail address) about what they find objectionable (or helpful) about the book, if you are familiar with it, and I will include your suggestions and comments (anonymously) as I make recommendations to the Kimball family. I will argue for revision (excluding the whole chapter on homosexuality at a minimum) or taking the book out of circulation. Please give me feedback, if so inspired. I would appreciate if you avoided bashing SWK as a person, even if you a understandably disturbed by some of his writings. He is my grandfather-in-law and was a complex human with strengths and weaknesses.
”In the meantime, feel free to spread the true rumor that the Kimball family is again considering retiring or revising The Miracle of Forgiveness. And discourage bishops and other well-intended members from gifting the 45-year-old first edition of the book.”
